The Historic House of Santo André is a 3-storey building which with its 5 suites all with private bathrooms and air conditioning is an excellent solution for families or groups that want to travel together. Located between the districts of Castelo, Alfama, Mouraria and Graça which are the heart of Old Lisbon that survived the earthquake of 1755, a few minutes up to the castle and a few minutes down into the labyrinth that is the old Alfama and Mouraria, filled with life, smells and music.
The earliest references to the Church of Santo André are from the beginning of the 13th century (1209 or 1229) and are also referred to in the Inquiries of the reign of King Dom Afonso III (1248 to 1274). It will have been made the seat of Parish of Santo André in 1286 after donation by the King Dom Diniz.
The church collapsed almost completely with the great earthquake of 1755 that destroyed the city of Lisbon and was the beginning of the end of the Portuguese empire, having undergone reconstruction works that finished in 1779.
After the liberal wars (between liberals and absolutists) from 1828-1834 and the extinction of religious orders, the church stuffing was sold and in 1843 the building was partially demolished for the construction of the square.
Two of the outer walls of the old church as well as several interior structures were used in the reconstruction of the new building in 1847, which remain to this day.
In 2015 the building was in a state of very advanced degradation, having been completely rehabilitated, and this rehabilitation was accompanied by the archaeology and anthropology services of the Lisbon City Hall.
A precious tile panel was found that was carefully removed and transferred to the National Tile Museum where it can be seen.
Also found and preserved, 2 of the arches of the inner chapels as well as part of the original walls of the reconstruction of 1779. Integrated in the magnificent architectural project can be observed during your stay.
The neighborhood is composed of a maze of narrow streets, winding alleyways, and steep flights of steps. Its kasbah-like layout is deliberate - this is the city's ancient Arab district, and although there are no Moorish houses still standing, the tightly-packed lanes, small archways, and stone-paved terraces are full of atmosphere and great fun to explore.
Lisbon's old quarter offers many things to do. Besides the castle, there are several historic 17th-century churches in the vicinity, as well as the city's impressive cathedral. A clutch of excellent museums provide cultural diversion, and Lisbon's biggest flea market is here. Some of the best views in Lisbon are from lofty squares and viewpoints, like Portas do Sol, Senhora da Graça
A few minutes up to the castle, and a few minutes down into the wonderful labyrinth that is the old Alfama and Mouraria, filled with life, smells and music. The only way to see the neighborhood's is to wander in, get lost (you will, like it or not) and be surprised at every turn of the narrow winding cobblestoned alleyways.
The neighborhood is also home to traditional fado houses, where this unique Portuguese musical expression can be appreciated in rustic and romantic surroundings.

Tobacco and drugs

Pets
Although animals can be very well-behaved at home, how they will behave in a new space is not a given. And nobody wants to hear a dog barking at 2am or a cat meowing
Unfortunately, the costs of cleaning up after the animal are enormous in order to avoid allergies for the next guests.
And then there's the problem of smell: nobody who has an animal thinks their house smells bad. But anyone who enters the house will smell it immediately. The house would have to be open for 2 or 3 days for the smell to disappear and that's very expensive.
Any violation of this rule will incur an extra cleaning fee.
Parties
For us, the safety and well-being of hosts, guests and the community in general are a priority, so parties and events of any kind are forbidden in the apartment.
Airbnb and Booking take this issue so seriously that in the event of a complaint, the booking is canceled and the guest is not entitled to any compensation.

Accidents
Accidents happen. If you damage something, let us know as soon as possible so that we can take care of it.
It is expensive to arrive at the property and discover damage that could lead to your next stay being canceled because there is no time to repair it. In this case, we will request a compensation
Guests have access to the entire house with the exception of the storage area.
The history of the house is fascinating since it follows the whole history of the city since the Christian reconquest in the 12th century.
Paulo loves history and having worked in the rehabilitation of buildings and palaces in the last 25 years, will always be available to explain both the rehabilitation of the building and its history as well as the entire political environment that led to the great transformations in the city.
But be aware because when he starts talking .....
